EAFS
Frequently asked questions
Everything you want to know about crossbreeding, membership and registration with the EAFS.
Does crossbreeding ruin the Friesian breed? +
No — the EAFS is not breeding away from the Friesian horse, it is breeding it into a healthier future. The Friesian character and appearance remain the starting point; crossing with an Arabian purebred or a warmblood increases genetic diversity and lowers the risk of hereditary disorders found in the purebred Friesian. Every cross is thoughtfully registered, with DNA parentage verification.
Is a cross without studbook papers still worth anything? +
With the EAFS, a registered cross receives full studbook papers, access to inspections and eligibility for predicates — just like a purebred horse. Already have an unregistered Friesian cross? It often still qualifies; check via our eligibility check.
How much does EAFS membership cost? +
€80 per year, all inclusive. No hidden costs for basic registration.
Is the EAFS an official, recognised studbook? +
Yes. The EAFS has existed since 2000 and has been ministerially recognised since 2006 as the official studbook for Arabo-Friesians and Warmblood Friesians in Europe.
What is the difference between Arabo-Friesian and Warmblood Friesian? +
The Arabo-Friesian crosses the Friesian horse with an Arabian purebred: stamina, refinement and the Friesian character. The Warmblood Friesian crosses the Friesian horse with a warmblood: more movement, versatility and athletic ability. Both retain the golden Friesian character.
Is DNA parentage verification mandatory? +
Yes, since 2024 DNA parentage verification is mandatory for every foal registered with the EAFS. This guarantees the reliability of the pedigree in the studbook.
How do I register my foal or horse with the EAFS? +
Via our public foal registration (foalreg.eafs.be) for newborn foals, or via the member portal for existing horses. Unsure if your horse qualifies? Take the free eligibility check first.
Do I need to be a member before my horse can be inspected? +
No. Anyone can register online for an EAFS inspection, member or not. If your horse is approved, membership (€80/year) is the next step towards full registration and predicates.
